Cameroon’s President Paul Biya has ordered the closure of nearly 100 Christian churches in key cities, citing criminal practices organized by Pentecostal pastors that threaten the security of the Central African nation.
Among the affected churches was Winners Chapel founded by Nigerian pastor, David Oyedepo.
Biya is using the military to permanently shut down all Pentecostal church denominations in the nation’s capital, Yaounde, and the North West Regional capital, Bamenda, which have the largest Christian populations in Cameroon. More than 50 churches have now been closed, with the government targeting nearly 100 in eight other regions.
“We will get rid of all the so-called Christian Pentecostal pastors who misuse the name of Jesus Christ to fake miracles and kill citizens in their churches. They have outstretched their liberty,” Mbu Anthony Lang, a government official in Bamenda, told CNN Wednesday.
Nearly 500 Pentecostal churches operate in Cameroon, but fewer than 50 are legal, he added.
On Sunday, a 9-year-old Christian girl collapsed and died during a prayer session in Winners’ Chapel, a Pentecostal church in Bamenda. The girl’s mother, Mih Theresa, told CNN Wednesday that the pastor intended to cast out the numerous demons that were in control of her daughter’s life.
“I want the government to stop these pastors who use mysterious powers to pull Christians and kill then for more powers. All my children have ran away from the Catholic Church in search for miracles, signs and wonders,” she told CNN while holding back tears.
Another Christian, Mveng Thomas, said his marriage ended abruptly when a Pentecostal pastor ordered his wife to dissolve their union. He said the pastor described him as “an unrepentant devil.”
But Pentecostal pastors said the move is evidence of Biya’s insecurity about the churches’ criticism of the government.
Pastors marched against the government’s decision Wednesday in Bamenda and Douala. Pastors said the Biya government sees the mass proliferation of churches as a threat.
Boniface Tum, a bishop of the Christian Church of God in Yaounde, said that Biya, who has been president since 1982, is becoming insecure about the freedom of speech within these churches.
“Authorizing only the Catholic, Presbyterian, Baptist, Muslim, and a few other churches, is a strict violation of the right to religion,” Tum added.
Targeted Pentecostal Christians in Bamenda are transforming their private homes into churches.
North West Regional governor Adolphe Lele L’Afrique said Wednesday that police had discovered the abduction of 30 children under age 18 by a pastor in Bamenda. The pastor said he wanted to remove the children from a bad society, Lele added.
Government officials also say that some pastors convince congregants that they do not need professional medical treatment for their ailments.
“How can a pastor say the sick needs no medical doctor? We need sanity in our Christian lives,” Nyang Blaise, a youth leader for Biya’s ruling party, CPDM, told CNN.
One woman said her mother was refusing cancer treatments because of her pastor.
“My mother’s condition is worsening after doctors confirmed she had cancer. She is dying silently, and yet we cannot persuade her to see a doctor for proper treatment, against her pastor’s wish,” Deborah Tanyi said.

I say No to phedophilia and No to the Senate bill endorsing child marriage in Nigeria - Omotola Jelaide-Ekeinde
The screen goddess, Omotola Jelaide-Ekeinde
expressed her feeling on the issue while speaking as a Special Guest at the
MBGN beauty pageant on Saturday night in Yenagoa.
According to her, approving early
marriage of the girl-child will expose her to various abuses and exploitation.
“The number of the Nigerian children
on our streets today is alarming and this is due to the abuses and exploitation
they suffer in their homes.
“Many of the girls out of school
today have been abused, raped and neglected.
“Who cares about the helpless and
neglected girl children that are being raped on daily basis? “A very
alarming number of children today are on the streets hawking or have been
abused, raped or are married to men/women who should be protecting them. Who
protects the children of Nigeria? Should we now remove the parental caution on
movies that say ‘Not for persons below 18′?
“Must we have to wait for another
Malala Yousafzai before we do what is right for the future of our children?”
Jelaide-Ekeinde asked.

The actress, who was honoured with
‘SilverBird Unique Personality of the year’ award, called on the government to
rather empower the girl-child through sound and compulsory education
programmes.
She enjoined Nigerians to rise and
say ‘no’ to the enslavement of the girl-child through early marriages, noting
that the time had come for Nigerian girls to be free from all forms of bondage
and deprivation.
“That I am the most influential
actress in Africa today is because my parents never gave me out to early
marriage. I stand up to say ‘no’ to the National Assembly’s endorsement of child-marriage.”

“It scares and totally shocks me that the Senate in Nigeria (the most
populous black nation in the world and giant of Africa) would not be passing in
a law ensuring that every child should compulsorily be enrolled in school.“This is a call for justice and equity for children especially the Nigerian girl child, who has the right to quality education, a childhood and the decision of whom and when to marry.

A nation of paedophiles
By Femi Fani-Kayode
Senator and former Governor Ahmed Sani, the Yerima Bakura, has finally had his way. The Nigerian Senate has bowed to his will and agreed to be silent about the age that young girls can get married in Nigeria. What this means once it is followed through and enshrined in our laws and Constitution is that girls that are as young as nine years old, provided they are deemed as having been ‘’physically developed enough’’ by their suitors, could be lawfully bedded and married in our country. That is the sordid level that we have now, as a people and as a nation, degenerated to. I weep for Nigeria and, perhaps more appropiately, I weep for the Nigerian girl-child. Yet we have no choice but to live with this new reality and to accept it as it is. After all, our representatives in the sacred halls of the Senate were not sensitive enough or ‘’man enough’’ to shoot down the whole thing, to stand firmly against the unholy agenda and to say boldly and firmly that, ‘’come what may’’, our children must be protected from sexual deviants and reprobates.
And since the Senate, in its infinite wisdom, has now endorsed the “Paedophile Charter”, which essentially seeks to make it lawful and constitutional for very young girls to get married and to have sex, it is my view that we have now become a nation of perverts and paedophiles. Every Nigerian should bow his or her head in shame because what the Senate did and seeks to do in the future, by beginning the process to amend our Constitution in order for it to cater for the filthy appetite and godless fantasies of child molestors and sexual predators is sordid, ungodly and unforgiveable.
Surely, we ought to be seeking to protect our children and not seeking to bed them. Yet it appears that not everyone shares our outrage and collective sense of shame. One Uche Ezechukwu made the following contribution which went viral on the social media networks and which I think speaks volume.
According to him, whatever was done in the time of old can as well be done in modern times – no matter how crude.
I am appalled by these words. The truth is that I have never heard such a self-serving and specious argument in defence of the philosophies and beliefs of Senator Ahmed Sani, who married a 12-year- old Egyptian girl, as this one. Ahmed Sani himself could not have argued it better. Yet I think that it is an utter shame. And this is more so because the individual that is putting the argument is supposedly a Christian. The Old Testament of the Holy Bible prescribes ‘’stoning’’ for adultery but that does not mean that Christian countries, or indeed secular states like Nigeria, should stone adulterers.
Neither does it mean that we should preserve the institution of slavery or crucify petty thieves simply because the Holy Bible endorsed both practices in the Old Testament. We must accept the fact that the interpretation of biblical and koranic provisions are evolutionary and are ever changing. Jesus Himself said ‘’laws are made for man and not man for laws’’. The suggestion that paedophilia has any place in any modern and decent society simply because it was once practised in the distant past is not only a despicable argument but it also does not make any sense. After all, cannibalism and child and human sacrifices were once widely practised and were held as being perfectly acceptable throughout the world as well but that does not mean that we should practice any of those terrible vices today.
The young man, Uche Ezechukwu, who appears to be defending child rape in the name of islam, should either let someone lay with and ‘’marry’’ his own six or seven-year-old daughter or he should seal his lips forever and stop trying to defend the indefensible. His assertions, and I daresay those of Senator Sani and anyone that shares their primitive views, are not only utterly immoral and reprehensible but they are also intellectually dishonest. I say this because the truth is that there is NO Muslim country in the world that has adopted the “paedophile charter” where six or seven year olds can marry and be bedded except for possibly Saudi Arabia and Iran.
David Mark presiding over Senate plenary |
Every other Muslim country in the world, including Indonesia, Pakistan, Malaysia, Egypt, Jordan, Senegal, the Sudan, Tunisia, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Palestine, United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Qatar, Bahrain, Dagestan, Albania, Bosnia, Somalia, Algeria, Libya, Mali, Azerbijhan and Syria, have, specifically, banned child marriage, paedophilia and child rape in their various constitutions and laws and some have declared it ‘’repugnant’’, ‘’unacceptable’’ and ‘’unislamic’’. Are these people not Muslims too? Like Christianity and Judaism, Islam is a noble, pure, honourable and ancient faith that seeks to protect the weakest and most vulnerable in society, including children. No one should use the misinterpretation of its provisions to try to justify or rationalise what is essentially depraved, shameful, disgusting and barbaric behaviour and the most sordid and filthy expression of sexual deviance and perversion. Even animals do not marry or bed their own infants. The bitter truth is that paedophiles have no place in any civilised society.
I am constrained to say that in the light of their “yes” vote to child marriage and their green light to paedophilia, every single member of the Nigerian Senate should bow his or her head in utter shame and should be compelled to offer their own infant and under age daughters for marriage. I repeat, they have turned us into a nation of perverts and paedophiles.
Child Bride Passed Bill: 12 Year Women Can Give Birth Safely-Sheikh Abubakar Gumi
Respected Kaduna based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad
Abubakar Gumi, has joined the fray on the issue of child bride by saying that
women can deliver children at 12 safely and thus there isnt such a big deal
with early marriage. Gumi made the revelation on his Facebook page.
His statement are as stated below;
WHO DETERMINES THE MARRIAGE AGE LIMIT?
Definitely it will not be a bunch of liberal
senators in a country majority of its citizen are Muslims. Marriage is a
sacrosanct religious contract. The secular constitution has already given, two
consensual adults (biological) the consent to engage in sexual intercourse, so
what is all this encroachment on religious sensitivities of people. It is truly
mischievous.
On religious issues that are liable to different
interpretation, Islam has accepted that only a medically scientific reason can
alter a decision.
Medically, from the age of 12, some girls can be
mothers. They can bear children and deliver them safely. Now in the west,
despite the laws against underage marriage (less than 18), thousands of
hundreds still gets pregnant out of illegal sexual activities. Islam as
pragmatic Religion thus permit any individual, matured to engage in legal
marriage to embrace all categories of human desires and protect teenagers from
irresponsible pregnancy. A married pregnant teen is absolutely in safer
socio-economic state of affairs than one in an illegitimate teen pregnancy.
“About 93,000 teenagers, 8,000 of them under the age
of 16, become pregnant in Britain each year. Just over half the pregnancies of
those under 16 end in abortion. In the West, only Canada, New Zealand and the
United States have higher rates.” The Prime Minister Tony Blair on learning
that two other 12- year-olds were pregnant by their teen-age boyfriends had to
call for a "new national moral purpose" and in June 2000, the
government announced a $96 million plan aimed at cutting in half the number of
teen pregnancies. The government also plans a major overhaul of sex education
and contraceptive services, which will be publicized more openly and made more
accessible”. \[CNN oct11,99.]
May Allah protect us all from the Dajjal of this
era.
