Swansea City sacked manager Michael Laudrup, a day after debunking rumours of his imminent exit

The Welsh club chairman Huw Jenkins, who on Monday dismissed speculations that they had discussed the former Real Mallorca and Spartak Moscow manager’s future, told the club website the decision was in its “best interest”.
Saturday’s 2-0 loss to West Ham fueled speculation concerning the former Real Madrid, Barcelona and Ajax player’s future at the South Wales club. It was their sixth defeat in eight Premier League matches, which left them only two points off the drop zone.
Club captain Garry Monk will be in charge of the ‘Swans’ for next Saturday’s clash with arch-rivals Cardiff City.
Monk had been tipped to join the club’s backroom staff as part of Laudrup’s backroom staff, but now finds himself at the helm of the Liberty Stadium affairs “for the foreseeable future”.
Swansea attacking legend Alan Curtis, who has been a member of the coaching crew, will assist Monk.
“It is a decision we have taken reluctantly,” Jenkins told the club’s website.
“But it’s a decision made in the best interests of Swansea City football club and our supporters.”
Laudrup succeeded current Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers in June 2012 and went on to lead Swansea to their first major trophy when they won the 2013 League Cup.
That triumph qualified them for this season’s Europa League. They are due to play Napoli in the round of 32 of Europe’s second-tier competition this month.
“However, after thinking long and hard about the best way forward, I felt it was unlikely we would achieve a stable environment at the club to allow us to get back to basics and produce the performance levels that have served Swansea City so well over the last few years,” Jenkins continued.
“Now we need to put that uncertainty behind us and move forward as a united football club on all fronts, while placing on record our gratitude to Michael for the work he has done over the last 18 months and wish him well for the future.”
