The vice-president elect of OAU Students' Union, Oladejo Funmi Olori wrote:
Our attention has been drawn to an inconsiderate circular from the university administration that students must vacate halls of residence before 12pm on Friday, 23rd May, 2014. This circular is meant to divide our ranks and create an atmosphere of panic among Great Ife students. But we remain undaunted! We also admonish Great Ife students not to be intimidated by the empty threat of the university authority, which lacks all moral authority to issue such directive at this moment.
We should recall that during NUGA games, this same threat was issued to
force Great Ife students out of their halls of residence. The short
notice of evacuation led to the death of three Great Ife students. And
we will not allow the repetition of such inhumane directive at this
period. The leadership of the union hence directs that Great Ife
students, who want to stay on campus, should take their time and avoid
haphazard travels. Of course the impotency of the university threat was
exposed during NUGA games when thousands of Great Awoites, Fajuyians and
ETFites remained in their several halls of residence without a scratch.
Great Ife residents, from Sport Hall to Angola Hall, should report any
attempt of forceful eviction to the Students’ Union leadership.
No doubt, this forceful eviction notice is not disconnected from the evil plans of the university management to extort our innocent, poor parents. We also admonish our members to continually treat the current situation with uttermost maturity, which has been employed since the beginning of this struggle.
This is the same maturity that mass of students displayed today when management consciously sealed the Amphi Theatre (we saw a security officer sealing the place as students move down) in order to provoke, and then blackmail us. The congress held successfully, while the management got shamed!
The students’ Union use this opportunity to remind students that our programmes of action in resistance to the current SCHOOL FEE HIKE is still on and students need to continue to take full part as they have been demonstrating greatly. The release of the management shows that our struggles so far are just. And we will not look back until we attain victory- THE TOTAL REVERSAL OF FEES TO STATUS QUO! All roads lead to the Students’ Union Building (SUB) where we will be moving to further the protests by 7am tomorrow. Every student is implored to be a mobilizer for the mass action.
We commend the mass of students for their steadfastness and unity so far. A people together can never be defeated.
AMANDLA AWETHU… NOTHING SHALL DISCOURAGE US!!!
