The official visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to Cameroun to
discuss joint efforts to curb Boko Haram in the region has thrown up an
indictment of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
A very credible Presidency source told Daily Sun that in the anti-terror war, Jonathan did not do much in forming a synergy with leaders of Nigeria’s neighbouring countries.
The source said during Buhari’s interaction with his Camerounian
counterpart, Paul Biya, he disclosed that Jonathan isolated himself from
the leaders of Cameroun, Chad and Niger. “The major complaint,
according to Biya, is that Jonathan never or seldom, at best, picked his
calls. He said most times he called, Jonathan neither picked nor
returned his calls. And as a result, the integration of efforts that
should have stopped Boko Haram’s foray and unchallenged run was
lacking.”
Biya, according to our source, said he was sure that leaders of other
neighbouring countries had the same experience, and therefore,
questioned how Nigeria alone would have contained Boko Haram, knowing it
is an international terror group with roots and connections in some
other countries from where they get into Nigeria and carry out attacks.
“This solo handling of the problem did not enable the neighbours put
in much to solve the problem until it got this bad,” he said.
The source also indicated that the Jonathan administration was lax
and reluctant to bring under control people very close to that
government who are flagrantly involved in crude oil theft and diversion.
According to the source, while Jonathan was in power, he was aware
that certain persons close to him and coming under the guise of the
protection of his government were involved in high scale oil theft.
Another source from the security outfit currently interrogating some
key personalities of the past administration disclosed that one of them
that was detained and later released told security agencies the Jonathan
administration was quite privy to crude oil theft using some government
agencies and individuals as fronts.
Daily Sun was told that the administration acted in compromise
while the theft lasted and never did much in checking the agencies,
individuals and security fronts used in the theft.
“There is no individual that would have access to the crude oil
loading terminals, bring in a vessel and load the product and set sail
to the high seas without being caught. We have several agencies of
government from the petroleum corporation to the conventional security
bodies like the Navy and other government bodies that patrol the
territorial waters, even private security outfits.
“So it is practically impossible that someone would beat all these
hurdles unaided and sail out with loads of crude oil. The government was
aware of the people involved and when or where the crude oil was taken.
The neighbouring countries we share common sea boundaries with also
knew that the Nigerian government under Jonathan merely compromised in
the theft,” our source said.

Shocking: Villagers Caught Soldiers In Boko Haram Operation
Kala-Balge Villagers Allegedly Holding 40 Soldiers Caught In Boko Haram Raid As Prisoners:
ENDS has received exclusive, distressing information that the villagers of Kala-Balge in Borno state, caught over 40 suspected soldiers of the Nigerian army and have held them prisoner since the defensive two weeks ago where they successfully thwarted a Boko Haram invasion and killed over 200 terrorists.
Since we were alerted to this highly incriminating story, 4 days ago, ENDS has conducted several investigations and sourced more evidence supporting this allegation. We have sourced information from several townsmen who alleged that they have in their custody, over 40 soldiers of the Nigerian army and the Nigerian government is aware of this and pleading for their release secretly…
The villagers of Kala-Balge are sworn to secrecy and this has limited the out-flow of this information. The unity of purpose and strength of resistance of the Kala-Balge people against Boko Haram can be recollected from their several successful united actions against Boko Haram in which they have repossessed two light weight tanks, one APC, several hilux trucks and dozens of motorcycles from the terrorists and killed and arrested numerous. A vigilante in an interview with ENDS last week told our officer in Abuja that due to distrust of the State security services, they refused to hand over the APC and rather burned it, because they were convinced if returned it will find its way back into Boko Haram hands.
The villagers believe these are not terrorists dressed as soldiers, but actual employed men of the Nigerian army. They also stated that this is not the first such event where soldiers have been implicated in Boko Haram raids.
A BBC Hausa report last week as carried by DailyTrust, stated that a soldier of the Nigerian army had complained on air about his unit of over 200 able men, being told to stand down and watch as only 50 Boko Haram terrorists destroyed Gamboru-Ngala town this Month, killing over 300 and burning down the entire town. The solder who spoke to BBC said a government military helicopter hovered above, providing cover to the terrorists and did not fire to immobilize their tank and repel their onslaught.
The United States has commented on the level of sabotage in the Nigerian army under the Goodluck Jonathan administration; their distrust of the Nigerian operations was so immense, it limited their information sharing with Nigeria.
The possibility of 40 Nigerian soldiers being caught while involved in an alleged Boko Haram raid is obviously very serious and has great implications in the current state of success of Boko Haram and the continuous genocide in the north with destruction of local farming. We have been unable to get an official response from the Nigerian military who did not answer our calls.

In a letter to the president, written on his behalf by his lawyer, Sheriff Okoh, Umar said he was innocent of the offences for which he was convicted.
The letter obtained by Punch to the president reads:
“Your Excellency Sir, an innocent man was convicted by the court on the date aforementioned. It is for this singular reason that we are applying to you for presidential pardon in the circumstances, pursuant to your exclusive legitimate constitutional powers as enshrined in your golden conscience and under Section 175(a) and (b) of the Constitution.
“Your Excellency Sir, we are applying for respite and pardon for the convicted felon Kabiru Umar (alias Kabiru Sokoto) because we have absolute faith in your compassion and highest sense of fairness, equity and justice first as a God-fearing man and next, as the leader of the most compassionate nation on earth
Had Kabiru Sokoto been sentenced in an open court for the corporate acts of Boko Haram as a terrorist organsiation, we would not have spared a thought to make this application, but he was sentenced alone for acts committed by other members of Boko Haram (an organisation that was only proscribed after his arrest, detention and the making of his no-case submission before the Federal High Court, Abuja division.)
Your Excellency, we vow to reach out beyond the imagination and work with you in resolving the Boko Haram imbroglio, with the firm belief that no quarrel of brotherhood is eternal. We shall undertake this national task for the pleasure of God almighty, believing in His divine will for our peaceful, united, symbiotic and mutual coexistence as brothers and sisters under a fair and just leader.
We most honestly and sincerely urge you to exercise your prerogative of mercy and grant pardon or respite in this matter in the interest of justice. The law permits you to right each and every wrong in Nigeria, including those of the courts and this is one good situation where such powers under Section 175 of our grund norm serve the collective interest of our beloved nation towards peace and harmony.”

UN Security Committee Blacklists Boko Haram
The United Nation Security Council committee yesterday May 22nd
blacklisted Islamic sect Boko haram after the Nigerian government on
Wednesday May 21st made a request asking for the sect to be blacklisted.
A statement released by the U.S. Ambassador to the
United Nations, Samantha Power says the move was to help close all avenue
of funding received by Boko Haram members
With this blacklisting, it makes it an offence for any country or individual to provide any form of support to Boko Haram. The group is now subject to an international asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo."Today, the Security Council took an important step in support of the government of Nigeria’s efforts to defeat Boko Haram and hold its murderous leadership accountable for atrocities. By adding Boko Haram to the U.N.’s 1267 (al Qaeda) sanctions list, the Security Council has helped to close off important avenues of funding, travel and weapons to Boko Haram, and shown global unity against their savage actions,”

Boko Haram Bombs Bridge Linking Nigeria To Cameroon
The bombing and destruction of a small bridge linking Nigeria to
Cameroon in Borno State today has caused mass destruction and confusion.
The bombing occurred on the outskirts of Gamboru Ngala, site of a
Monday Boko Haram attack that claimed the lives of over 300 village
residents.
At least 30 people were killed during the late Thursday afternoon bombing incident, sources tell SaharaReporters. The bridge links the immigration check points of both Cameroon and Nigeria.
The bombing event took place on the same day of a mass burial in the town of Gamboru Ngala. It was there on Monday where a Boko Haram-led raid on the small village claimed the lives of over 300 residents, nearly ten per cent of the population.
Sources tell SaharaReporters that 315 people of the 336 who died in the Monday attack were buried in a solemn ceremony led by civic and religious leaders.
The Boko Haram has not claimed responsibility for this latest bombing attack, but residents of Gamboru Ngala told us that there is deep suspicion that the Islamist group is behind this latest attack in this vulnerable area.
Since the Monday attacks many of the local Gamboru Ngala youth have joined an anti-Islamist vigilante force in the smoldering village. It was created and scores of young people are helping Nigerian military forces in the area.

Is complains and blames for failure of our culture? – Nkiru Sylvanus
“#bring back our girls. We have all spoken, we are known for that, we have always been like this, as a child growing up, all I hear is complains and blames, why this is not working or why that isn’t working, it has always been good reasons why we failed! Now am beginning to ask, is that our way of life? Is complains and blames for failure our culture? This is a great nation! We can actually take responsibility for our actions, we can solve the problems we created! The kidnappers, armed robbers, terrorist, are someone’s brothers, close friends, husband, boy friend, lover! Father! So they are human they live among us. There can only be change when we agree. In a nation where government has failed us, we as individuals can bring the change and solution we seek and desire. It’s all about sacrifice, it’s all about our voices! It’s all about unity! Not an opportunity to be popular! Or an opportunity to be richer! I was once a victim! From my little experience I can imagine what those children are passing through! Pray that ur freedom is not taken by a friend! Not to talk about an enemy! This is not a time to cry or weep for this nation for we have wept for too long. it’s a time to act! A time to stand together! A time for solution! Like Obama will say! “Yes we can” and I Nkeiruka Sylvanus say! Now is the time not tomorrow!”

‘I will sell them,’ Boko Haram leader, Shekau says of kidnapped Nigerian girls
Fears for the fate of more than 200 Nigerian girls turned even more
nightmarish Monday when the leader of the Islamist group that kidnapped
them announced plans to sell them.
“I abducted your girls. I will sell them in the market, by Allah,” a man claiming to be Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau said in a video first obtained by Agence France-Presse.
“There is a market for selling humans. Allah says I should sell. He commands me to sell. I will sell women. I sell women,” he continued, according to a CNN translation from the local Hausa language.
Boko Haram means “Western education is sin.” In his nearly hourlong, rambling video, Shekau repeatedly called for Western education to end.
“Girls, you should go and get married,” he said.
The outrageous threat means the girls’ parents worst fears could be realized. Parents have been avoiding speaking to the media for fear their daughters may be singled out for reprisals.
“Wherever these girls are, we’ll get them out,” Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan vowed Sunday.
But weeks after the girls were kidnapped April 14, Africa’s largest country seems to be no closer to finding them, triggering complaints of ineptitude — some of which is expressed on Twitter with the globally trending hashtag #BringBackOurGirls.
On Sunday, about 100 demonstrators gathered outside the Nigerian High Commission in London, chanting, “Bring them back!” and “Not for sale!”
Crowds from Los Angeles to London rallied on Saturday as well.
“Access to education is a basic right & an unconscionable reason to target innocent girls,” former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wrote Sunday on Twitter. “We must stand up to terrorism. #BringBackOurGirls.”
Families had sent their girls to the rural school in Chibok to try to get them a desperately needed education. Though Nigeria has Africa’s largest economy, poverty remains widespread: Nearly 62% of the country’s nearly 170 million people live in extreme poverty, according to the CIA World Factbook.
According to accounts, armed members of Boko Haram overwhelmed security guards at school last month, pulled the girls out of bed and forced them into trucks. The convoy of trucks then disappeared into the dense forest bordering Cameroon.
On Friday, Nigerian authorities updated the number of girls kidnapped to 276. At least 53 of the girls escaped, leaving 223 in the hands of their captors, police said.
Authorities said the number of missing girls could grow as police fill in spotty school enrollment records.

Boko Haram Will Start Attacking Bigshots In Nigeria says Prophet TB Joshua
Prophet TB Joshua while preaching yesterday, 4th of May, 2014 in his
church said Boko Haram will start attacking bigshots in our society.
Expressing his shock that political parties such as APC and PDP are
against themselves instead of coming together as one to fight Boko Haram
in Nigeria, he says it’s quite risky because the group would soon turn
back to start attacking them. It will be recalled that, Prophet TB
Joshua has not stopped giving different prophesies every Sunday on the
altar while he preaches, ever since the over 200 school girls
disappeared into thin air. His words after the cut.
“Nigeria is calm; it is the political parties that are not calm. These political parties gave birth to militants and Boko Haram.”
“If our political class does not stop their campaigns and rallies and put aside the name of parties – APC, PDP, Labour – to come together to discuss as Nigeria, these people will turn against them. Any moment from now, you will hear of ‘bigshots’ being attacked.”
“They should suspend all rallies and acrimonious campaigns. It is this division that gave opportunity for hoodlums, militants and Boko Haram to explore and exploit,” he stated.

Niger Republic Youths Were Paid $3,085 To Join Boko Haram
Young Nigerians at the border town of Nigeria and Niger Republic,
Diffa, have confessed to be recruits of the Islamist militant group,
Boko Haram.
A member of a gang in Niger told the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) that Boko Haram Islamist militants from Nigeria “regularly come across the border, looking for recruits.”
The gang members, in their 20s, said they were paid $3,085 (about N500,000) to join the insurgency and since they were jobless, they were willing to take the cash, but with no interest in protecting Sharia law.
However, they said they were willing to strike if given the assignment to do so, as they blamed their decision to join the militant group on their joblessness.
“They have paid Nigerian naira ($3,085, £1,835) to those of us who followed them over there,” one of the young men said.
“When they come, we inform them about what’s going on, what the security forces are up to.
“We have no jobs; some of us are still at high school, but we need money. Violence has become a form of work for us.”
These confessions were revealed in a documentary published by the BBC, on Tuesday, after Thomas Fessy, a BBC reporter visited Diffa region in Niger Republic.
BBC made contacts with this local gang, who claimed they collaborated with Boko Haram and agreed.
According to BBC documentary, five of these young Nigeriens said they had already joined the militant Boko Haram sect, while two other members were killed in operations.
In total there are about a dozen gang members in a tiny, dark room, built with local mud-bricks.
When the reporter asked them: “If you are asked to launch an attack here, will you be ready to do that?”
Their response: “Yes, we are ready. We have no job, so, we are ready. That is what we are here for.”
When the BBC reporter asked if they agreed with Boko Haram’s reason for fighting, they answered in unison: “No. We only do it for the money.”
Arriving one by one to meet the BBC crew earlier on a street corner in Diffa, they all wore skinny jeans, bright coloured T-shirts and shiny chains, like those seen around the necks of American rappers on music videos.
Their attitude and brand new clothes made them stand out when they walked down the dusty streets of Diffa.
The fashion style is clearly inspired by Western consumerism rather than Islamist militancy.
“We break into houses for cash; sometimes we beat people for money, we steal their animals so we can eat and then we gather up and take Tramol (an opiate drug), smoke ganja (marijuana) and drink alcohol,” one of the gang members said.
The BBC reporter, giving an account of his experience at the border town, said: “At the Sahara, there is little space to take for covers from the storm at the village, as the first attack by Boko Haram by its militants meant deadly worst times for them to live in the border and the river between Niger and Nigeria.”
He said on either side of the border, people had enjoyed strong links for centuries, sharing ethnicity and culture.
The report said Nigeria’s neighbouring countries, Niger, Cameroon and Chad, were fearful that the group’s insurgency might spill over to their borders.
A resident told the BBC that the area was just three kilometres away from Nigeria, expressing his belief that the border would keep them safe for now.
On Lake Chad, according to the documentary, Nigerians were fleeing by boats, as the reporter quoting from a United Nations (UN) report, said the UN estimates that 500 people crossed into Niger from Nigeria every week.
One of the refugees, Mutala Suleiman, who arrived last month with his two wives and six children, narrating his story, said: “We were almost going to bed that night when we heard the gunshot.” We ran to escape. A little girl was shot as she fled the burning house.”
He said he counted 50 dead people on the streets during the last attack.
The Diffa area, according to BBC reporter, was suffering from growing refugee crisis without camps and the authorities argued they could become new targets or worse, recruitment centres for Boko Haram.
He stated in the documentary that “Boko Haram insurgents have shown they can hit the Nigerian state in different ways. While raiding villages, attacking schools and abducting children.
To check against possible attack, the threat, according to the report, means daily patrol across the borders and several attacks have been foiled over the last months, while dozens of men suspected to be linked with Boko Haram had been arrested.
“We know that Boko Haram members come across the border, but we are watching them closely,” Diffa government representative Inoussa Saouna said.
“Just last December, we arrested two dozens of men — we believe they were planning to kidnap the regional governor, the military zone commander and myself,” he added.
Military police, customs officers, as well as national guards conduct daily patrols along the porous border to mitigate the threat.
The border town On paper, the border is supposed to be secured by joint patrols with soldiers from both countries. However, they are yet to start.
Niger’s security forces are receiving training, logistics and intelligence support from both the United States and France.
Most of the border between Niger and Nigeria is naturally drawn by the Komadougou Yobe River.
On either side of it, people have enjoyed strong links for centuries, sharing ethnicity, culture and living off the cross-border trade.
At the Bosso border point, many people cross on foot through water knee-high as the river is at its lowest level in the hottest month of the year.
It allows motorbikes and cars to drive through easily too.
Most cars showing Nigerian number plates come from Borno State bearing the slogan “Home of peace”.”
The UN refugee agency said more than 50,000 people had now crossed into Niger, fleeing the relentless violence.
The many lake islands are now home to thousands and a lot of people, like Mourtalla Souleymane, have made it to the trading post of Krikri on Niger’s shore.
But how many more people can one of the poorest countries in the world take in? Borno State has a population of five million 10 times more than Niger’s Diffa region.
The UN refugee agency said it would try to build new homes and expand existing neighbourhoods rather than setting up camps.
In a report published this month, the Brussels-based think-tank International Crisis Group noted that Boko Haram has “resorted to forced conscription and recruiting criminals and thugs, paying them for attacks.”
Troops uncover Boko Haram’s operational tricks Troops fighting insurgency in the north eastern part of the country have uncovered a trick of members of the Boko Haram group, which they use to disguise, with their vehicles unable to be detected from the air.
Top security sources disclosed to the Nigerian Tribune authoritatively that the insurgent group made use of used oil and sand to coat the body of the vehicles which they used in their attack.
According to the source, this made them invisible in the air during bombings by the Nigerians Air Force.
The sources disclosed that the essence of the gimmick was to make the Boko Haram vehicle invisible from the air, as they would look like ordinary ground.
The sources disclosed that this was one of the major problems being faced by the Air Force during their operations as these vehicles could not be picked from the air.
However, the lid was blown open by one of the Boko Haram suspects who was involved in the local technology and during investigations, he confessed that the method was used to disguise as the Air Force planes flew over their areas.
The suspect said with the trick, the group had been able to survive a number of bombings from the Air Force.
The top security source revealed that the method was uncovered when a large number of the Boko Haram vehicles were captured and were found to be coated with the used-oil and sand.
In a related development, there are strong indications that the state of emergency in the three north eastern state of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, which ended last Saturday may be extended by another three months, after the meeting of all state governors today.
According to a top military source, the extension would afford the troops the opportunity to mop up all their operations in the area.
The sources disclosed that if the state of emergency was not extended, the country would be back to the dark days when the terrorists held sway in those areas of the country.
The source added that the military had already started pushing for the extension of the state of emergency, which was their presentation at their last security meeting.
The extension, the source revealed, would afford the military the opportunity to consolidate on the gains made so far and end the insurgency in the country.
